Crazy about Emily!

I adopted my daughter from China. Now I'm married and learning to be a wife & Mom all at the same time! YIKES! LID 12/08/05 Adoption Day 12/12/07

DID YOU SEE THE RQ?!?!

Ok. I admit it. I am not working to my full potential this week. How am I supposed to work when there is a thingy on Rumor Queen that says people who are LID Dec 8, 2005 have heard from their agency that they are getting a referral this go round?!?!?   Ok, I realize that sometimes agencies get it wrong, but just the fact that it’s out there, makes me feel like jello on the inside.

I’m gonna make myself sick at this rate!!  And I have so much to do at work this week!! UGH!

As Shanny has pointed out, it is after all, Rumor Queen and not Fact Queen.  But man, it’s hard to not be all excited at this point.

Martian Child

Tony got us sneak peek passes last night to see Martian Child, starting John Cussak. I just adore him, I have ever since his Say Anything days, and I had seen the previews for this movie the last week or two and had wanted to go anyway.  So it was perfect. Plus, it totally got me out of the house and in theory it was supposed to get my mind off of “are we in, or not” as far as the referrals go.

The movie was GREAT. I can’t say enough good things about it. However, the whole plot of the movie is that the John Cussak character adopts a little boy! So, it really didn’t get my mind off the adoption at all. I did find parts of it really funny, since I’m sitting in his shoes so to speak. There is one scene where he is waiting for the phone to ring, waiting for THE CALL to say he is approved to adopt this child. He sits by the phone all day and every time it rings he like jumps out of his skin. I was roaring, knowing that could be me all too soon!  The movie was really sweet and the kid is adorable and I totally bawled my eyes out at the end.   It was really great and I highly recommend it.

And between you and me, Tony got a little teary eyed too. But shhh I’m not supposed to tell!

Whirl Wind

Forgive the bullets, but I’m in a bit of a rush

  1. I got my camera this morning. It is FABULOSO! I can not wait to play with it thoroughly tonight!!
  2. I had my agency travel meeting this morning. It went much better than expected.  I learned a bunch.
  3. there is even MORE stinking paperwork to do. Can you believe it? UGH
  4. I saw Dan, In Real Life last night with T.  It’s a chick flick, don’t let the name fool you. I wanted to see a movie, get my mind off the adoption/referrals.  In the movie, one of the brothers/sisters of Dan has a child adopted from China. It’s not ever mentioned that she was adopted, she’s just part of the family. It was very cool that it was just there in the movie, like no big deal.  The movie was ok. Save it for a rental or an HBO view.
  5. Rumors looking good for the cut off to be Dec 8th!! I’d much rather the cut off be the 12th, so I would feel more comfortable that I’m in, but I’ll take a cut off of the 8th.
  6.  My brain is turning into mashed potatoes. It’s a sad, sad, state of affairs!!
  7. I gave my agency all my telephone numbers to reach me. It like really sank in that a referral is totally possible while I was giving them my digits.  YIKES!

PATHETIC

Rumor Queen  is still reporting a rumor of a cut off (possibly) of Dec 12th.  I’m so excited, and at the same time trying to restrain myself.   AND furthermore, it is possible that this is the week referrals will be mailed or start to arrive.

HOW am I supposed to work? I should have saved up more days off so I could take some “mental health” days now!  I’m dying over here. Work is like something I do while I’m waiting for a new post on RQ! It’s pathetic.

Really, I guess I’m not that bad, but I’m getting there. This past weekend I kept myself extremely busy. Went to another Wake Forest game (we won!) on Saturday. And I took tons of pictures of the tail gaiting…and you know what, I think I left my camera in my mom’s car. (mom can you check please?)  How stupid was that to do?  The one week I need a camera?!?  The good news is that I ordered a very nice la dee dah camera last week and it should be here tomorrow. I got the Nikon D40X  which Shanny turned me on too. I’m SO Excited about this camera. It has a really great lens and super fast shutter speed, so I’ll finally be able to keep up with my nephew!  I hope I can get it figured out enough in the next couple of days that it’s working when/if I get a referral call.

Just writing that makes me want to throw up a bit. Oh lord.

Back to weekend re-cap…. Yesterday Tony and I went to the Panther’s football game. They stunk AND I got sunburned.  Tony wants to go again in like 2 weeks. He’s nuts.

And one last final sports thing, The RED SOX won the world series last night! Tony thinks that is due solely to his cheering and coaching the team on, via shouting at the TV.  He is a happy happy boy this morning. Wait, he is telling me is a CHAMPION now…(sheesh)

I can’t believe I had this much sports stuff to write about. I’m not even a sports person. Mostly it’s just T dragging me around. (but don’t tell him I said that!)   In spite of all this trying to keep my mind busy and away from the computer, I still thought and talked about China incessantly. I told my Dad, it’s like we’re Olympians, we’ve got our eye on China!   HA HA HA

Camera Questions

For those of you folks who have already been to China, can you tell me what the internet connection was like in places like the White Swan?  Or The Victory? I’m not sure yet where we will be staying. I heard awhile ago that the White Swan was closing for renovations and then I heard that they pushed that back. I have no idea at all about what my agency does normally or if they have a “normal” procedure. They don’t tell us much at all. (but that is another post for a different day)

This is what I’m wondering:  I’m bringing at least 2 digital cameras to China with me, more likely we’ll bring 3. We do not have a lap top to bring, because both mine and my dad’s are work lap tops and they get funny when you mention bringing them to China with us!!  Anyways, what I really need to know is can I upload photos there in an internet café kind of place to a place like flickr or snapfish?  I’m terrified that we’ll lose one of the cameras or it will become corrupted in some way and we won’t have the gajillion pictures that we took.  I’m also bringing a couple of the disposable regular cameras, just in case.

Does anyone know if uploading the photos works? I’m wondering mostly about if the computers there would require the camera software to function. I have a mac at home, so I don’t need no stinking software to work my cameras!  But I’m thinking, well sheesh, they probably don’t want me to put software on their hotel computers, right? So how does this work?  Anyone? Anyone?

Rumors

Rumors abound this month! I can’t believe it, but they are actually saying in Spain that they can “confirm” (as if it were fact) that the cut-off will be Dec 12. HOLY MOLY!!!

I’m not sure how reliable this is. I read it in the original (did I ever mention that I lived in Spain for awhile in college?) and it definitely says that. What I mean is I don’t know how this Spanish person KNOWS for sure anything. I don’t know how anyone would know anything for sure at this point. At best, I would think that people would be getting “the call” this time next week. Most likely they will be mailed this time next week and no one will hear anything until Nov 5th or 6th.  So, how would they know now? I’m not sure.

I am all wound up. A cut off of the 12th?!?!  I mean wowsers. I would totally be in, even if they over shot the cut off date by 2 or 3 days, you know?  *sigh*  This week is going be long. Soooo long!!   I don’t know how I’m supposed to do regular things like work, or eat or sleep. I could see Emily’s face in like less than 2 weeks!! OH MY GOD!

Bridal Gowns

OK…so this is a major deviation from the adoption stuff. However, I need to complain, and who better to complain to than my invisible bloggy audience? Heh    A friend of mine got engaged a few weeks ago (congrats Jody!) and she suggested that we go look at bridal gowns together. Sounds fun right? So for kicks, I went on line this afternoon to see what was out there. I looked at David's Bridal  which is like a chain of bridal dress stores.  I don’t know if they have them everywhere, but maybe they do. It’s NOT a super expensive place. It’s a normal place for normal girls.  It’s not a la dee dah place, is what I’m trying to say.

OK, first.  When did it become ok to put red trim on a wedding dress?  It looks nice, but it also is very…odd. I guess I thought all dresses came in white or various shades of white or cream.  And this is not the only red trim dress out there. There are TONS now. Look in any bridal magazine.  I’m going to try one on, just to see how ridiculous it looks. Because really, in the pictures, they just look stupid.

Secondly, do they not make bridal gowns with sleeves anymore? I don’t want to wear a strapless dress. I have big giant upper arms that are hideous. They need to be covered. I don’t want to wear a stupid jacket over my gajillion dollar dress. I want a dress with sleeves!  I also am not thrilled about spending a whole day hiking up my dress over my boobs. I want to have fun, I don’t want to be uncomfortable and self conscious the whole time.  Plus, I mean, there are going to be what, like 1000 photos taken of me that day right? I want to feel like I looked good!   I have seen TWO dresses on this entire site that had sleeves, like proper sleeves, and I wasn’t thrilled with either of them.

So. Given all this, should I just go look, and see if they have anything in person that isn’t on line or in a magazine? Or should I just say, this isn’t what I want at all, and maybe look at like a suit kind of thing. I mean, after all, I’m in my 30s now. It’s not like I’m 22 and need the big fluffy beaded dress.  Does it depend on how big the wedding we have is? Or should I get the dress I want regardless of where/when/how big the wedding itself is?  Is there some sort of etiquette about that?  Have any of you gotten married recently? Where did you go for the dress? Was it horribly uncomfortable to wear the way it looks like it would be?

Last Hoorah!

Awhile ago, (it was July, I looked!)  I asked y’all for your input on where Tony and I should go for one last hoorah before Emily comes home.  After much back and forth and debating and looking for deals we finally decided to take a long weekend and go here!!  We leave tonight right after work. We’re going to go see a show, gamble, drinking, dancing, and just generally having a great time and living la vida loca!!  I’ve never been before and I am SOOO excited.  Today can not go by fast enough!!

VIVA LAS VEGAS!!!

GROAN

I have a new emotion about the adoption every 5 mins. It’s making me insane. Sometimes, I’m super upbeat and I’m writing down lists of things I still need to get and do in her room. 20 mins later, I’m convinced that I won’t get a referral until Dec or January and that the CCAA can do whatever the heck it likes and refer out just one day at a time from now on.  I’m wearing myself out.  In about 3 weeks, I’m going to have a really super wonderful fabulous day, or a super stinky one. Either way, I’m going to be in tears.  That isn’t exactly how I pictured getting “the CALL” . In fact, I’ve pretty much stopped picturing the call at all anymore, because really, who the hell knows?

I guess this is one of my blue minutes.  No worries about me though, because goodness knows in 5 mins, I’ll have another feeling that will completely take over my mind!!  It is very hard to stop this obsession about when I’m getting a referral and how far the CCAA will get next time and what if they screw up and I’m skipped? Or my paperwork fell behind some desk somewhere? I mean, it’s been TWO YEARS!  I’m so ready for this to be done. I know the next few weeks are going to make me a crazy woman.   *sigh*  That’s something to look forward to, isn’t it?!? Ha ha ha

Weekends and Workouts

My weekend was very good, and very busy.  I got up really early Sat morning and drove to Winston to meet up with my folks. Then we all rode up together to Raleigh for my Sister’s baby shower.  I had a good time, and she got lots of really fun stuff for my new nephew to be!  We also celebrated my Dad’s 63rd birthday! Happy Birthday Pops!  There was a lot of cake on Saturday, let me tell you! But we had a good time, and made it back to Winston that night.  Tired, but safe & sound.  Pictures of the shower will show up tonight. I never seem to be able to get pictures up as quickly as I would like.

I also hit the gym yesterday. It has been hard getting back into a workout routine. For one, although I enjoy working out, I don’t LUV it the way I loved doing Tae Kwon Do.  But since my knees are now shot and the class moved to a location about an hour from my house, it just means I can’t do TKD anymore.  Which stinks. I know I could join another class, but frankly they are too expensive. Anyplace that charges you $200+ to join is ridiculous. If you have kids and you have them in karate or some other martial arts and they are making you buy their uniform and spend a gajillion dollars and sign up for a year, you are being played.  I definitely would love for Emily to participate in some sort of martial arts, but I’m not going to spend that much money on a five year old. (please Lord, don’t make me eat those words!)   Anyways, back to me, I have a few health issues now where I have to be extremely cautious when I work out. I’m sure you remember last year when I started fainting left and right. Although we have it under control now, and I haven’t passed out in forever, it still means I just have to be careful. If I over exert myself, or stand up for too long without moving, I’ll start to feel badly/dizzy.  But, I’m aware now of what is going on, so I’m on the lookout. And if I start feeling yucky, I just stop and sit down. And presto, I feel better.  This means that for the most part, any sort of class, like yoga or jazzercise where you would do any sort of upside down movements (yoga) or stay upright and bounce around for an hour are pretty much out.   I don’t like it, but that’s the way it is.  Which leaves me with a lot of walking. Which is really REALLY boring.  I’m not a runner, but I am trying to do some small (very very small) interval runs on the treadmill.  So basically I walk 5 mins, run 1 min, walk 5, run 1.  It’s still boring, but I guess it’s better than nothing.  I’ve also had some luck on the elliptical machine, and again intervals are what I’m doing.  I did make up a new Heart Pumping playlist for my ipod, which helps a lot, but I mean, really, I can only listen to “welcome to the jungle” so many times, ya know?

Can anyone think of any other exercises that would you know, make me feel the burn, but NOT make me so exhausted?  I know it is a weird thing to ask. The POINT of exercise is to “feel the burn” right?  I thought about swimming, and although I love to swim, the closest indoor pool is about a 25 min ride from here.  Which means frankly that I just won’t go.  I’m tempted to buy some machine to keep at the house, but I’m afraid I’d only use it for a month or so, and then get bored with it. What do y’all think?  I would love to get into a bit better shape before Emily comes home. I’m thinking I probably have 12 weeks until that happens. That’s enough to make a bit of difference, right? *sigh*  I wish you could just WISH yourself into shape. Wouldn’t that be nice?   I’m starting to think that maybe I should see a personal trainer, just to get like a workout routine. I know they are expensive, but if I could meet with one once a month for the next 3 months, that wouldn’t be too expensive, would it? Have any of you all done that?  What did you think? Was it worth it?

TGIF

It has been a long week, but it is Friday at last! WHEW!  I feel like some Fridays, there should be someone standing outside my front door in the morning waiting to put a medal around my neck. Congratulations Shannon! You made it to another Friday!  Cue the national anthem!    Do any of you guys feel like that?

Yesterday was a LOOOOOOOONG day.  I left work a bit early to head up to Winston for the football game. Unfortunately there was an accident on the highway and someone passed away.  I don’t know how it is where you live, but if someone dies on the highway here, they close the highway until they complete the investigation and junk.  Guess where I was when this happened? About 3 miles behind the accident. Sooo I sat on the highway for TWO HOURS yesterday afternoon.  It was so aggravating and to be honest after awhile I really really had to pee!   I finally escaped and as I was driving back to my house I heard on the radio that a little bit of road rage had taken over a few folks who were still stuck. They started shooting each other. Good grief people. Sitting still for 2 hours makes you want to kill someone?  Ever heard of anger management? Relax!   Anyways, we finally got headed out to Winston. We were much later than we wanted to be, but we did make the game. No tailgating though. Oh well.

Wake Forest won last night 24-21. GO DEACS!  We only got to stay until the 3rd quarter before we had to leave, but it was a lot of fun.  I’m starting to enjoy football. I’ll never be one of those people who does nothing on Sunday but watch games, but definitely going to a game in person is so much fun.

Michelle asked me an interesting question in the comments yesterday.  She wanted to know if I ever considered changing Emily’s name over the last few years, since I have been sitting around with nothing to do but wait.  And the answer is yes! Mostly what I’ve wondered about is that when we finally get to meet her, will I look at her and go, oh no! She’s not an Emily! She’s very clearly a Clara or a Mia or a Susan!! What do I do!?!  So, I mean if that happens, then fine. I can change her name. But really the only thing that I’ve had to hold on to is her name. I don’t know what she looks like, or how old she is, or which part of China she’s from. But I know her name. I know that probably doesn’t make a lot of sense to anybody other than me, but it has been a comfort to me. About the only constant in this whole thing.  (how crazy is that?)

So that’s it peeps. Off to my sister’s baby shower tomorrow, so there will be fun pics soon.  Hope you guys have a nice Friday. Medals for everyone!

Hanging In There

I’m just hanging in there. I’m not overly upset and I’m not all calm and serene, I’m just…here.  I know it will be at least 2 weeks before we hear any kind of reliable rumors, if we end up hearing anything at all. And probably another 3 weeks before the next batch of referrals comes out. So I’m just hanging out.  Waiting.

I am staying incredibly busy. Tonight T & I are going up to Winston Salem to watch Wake Forest play Florida State in football. It should be a good game. Tony tells me it will even be on ESPN so that’s pretty cool. And it finally FINALLY is starting to feel like fall around here. High today of 71. WOO HOO. On Monday, it was like 93. How insane is that?  Tonight while we watch the game it should be in the 60s. Perfect football watching weather.

And this weekend I’m going to a baby shower for my sister. She is due in mid Nov, so it should be really fun. I love my nephew Colin so much, I can’t wait to meet his little brother!   Plus, baby showers are fun. Good food and lots of cutie stuff to look at.

And one last thing. This morning at work, a gal asked me “hey, how’s Emily doing?”  It’s the first time anyone’s ever asked me that. It kind of hit me, like woah, people are going to be asking me this all the time soon. This isn’t someone I see all the time, she usually works 3rd shift, so I don’t see her that often. So it was weird to me anyways, that she remembered enough about what I was going through to ask.  I explained I was still waiting. And she was like, well when are we going to hear some good news?  SOON I hope!!  But I was able to say, well, maybe in a couple of weeks. And like, I meant it. Maybe in a couple of weeks I WILL have some good news.  And really, the beginning of Dec isn’t too far away. So. Wow. I’m just hanging out, but it’s working!

Crib Assembly

Thanks to Jeff who helped Tony put together Emily's crib this weekend. I, I took a nap. HA HA HA...I did get up every once in awhile to snap a photo!

My New Favorite Show

Every fall they come out with new stuff on TV. Usually, I don’t get really into a new show, because usually the shows I like get canceled. Sad, but true.   So I stick with my favorites. I love Heroes. It’s so complex and I love all the characters. And I sure as heck have spent some time wondering which power I would rather have. I don’t think reading minds would make me very happy,  on the other hand, I adore the idea of being able to fly, so for now, I’m picking that one.

But I’m going out on a limb here. My new favorite show (please don’t get canceled, please don’t get canceled!) is Journeyman.  It is SOOO cool. This guy (who is a hottie by the way) keeps living his life here and now, but every once in awhile he just shows up in the past. It’s so strange. It’s sort of like Quantum Leap, only he isn’t another person in the past, he’s himself, and he keeps bopping around in time, forward and backward. It’s sooo interesting!  You should watch it! Plus, isn’t he a cutie?

Emily's New Pediatrician

Today T & I had a consultation with Emily’s new pediatrician.  She was AWESOME. I got such good vibes from her. She’s been practicing for 25 years, and has 3 children adopted from Russia herself. She knew all about referrals and orphanages and vaccinations and what not. It was a really good, very informative meeting. Tony thought she rocked.  A couple of things really stood out:

1) She will look over our referral and get back to us probably that very same day via email or over the phone or in person if we really want with her recommendations.

2) She wrote us a list of common OTC meds to take and included dosage info. And then she said she would put together a little pack of prescription stuff to take with us to China. How cool is that?!?

3) They have office hours on Sat AND Sunday, from 9 to 1.

4) We can call her from China any time, night or day. She said she was there to hold our hands when we needed her.

Can I just tell you how relieved I am that we found someone this awesome? Plus, she is totally covered on my insurance so, that is a big bonus!!  It was great to get this done, and I feel so much more excited about the adoption again. It’s weird to be down and blue and then up and excited in the space of a day or two. But that’s adoption for you!

Oh, and another cool thing, I had to sign a form at the office. In the space labeled PARENT.  That’s me!! A parent!!!  So cool!

Converters & Adapters

I was talking with T last night about how I need to figure out what electrical things we are bringing to China with us. The reason? We need to figure out how many adapters and/or converters we need. I’ve been advised to bring a surge protected power strip and perhaps an extension cord, because the plugs might not be convenient. That’s good, but I still need the adapter thingys so I can plug them into the wall without frying my stuff or burning the hotel down!!

These are the things we’re thinking of bringing

My ipod A/C charger

Battery charger (for camera batteries)

Tony’s CPAP machine (he has the apnea)

Video camera charger? We are thinking of getting a video camera, so…if we get one, then we’ll have to bring that.

NO hair dryer. I’m told all the hotels have them, although they don’t work that great. I have really fine hair, so as long as I’m not dripping wet, my hair will dry on it’s own fairly quickly.

I would like to bring a lap top, but the one I have is work issued, so I’m thinking that probably is not a good idea to bring it with me.  Mostly, I just want to be able to email everyone pictures, so I might be able to do that at the hotels there.

Are there other appliances that I need to think about?  I found this great site, you plug in where you are going, what kind of appliance you have and it tells you what converter/adaptor you need to buy. Target sells these “world adapter” packages for about 30$. However, only 1 of the plugs in there is good in China. That’s silly. I need like 4 for China and NONE for Great Britain!  So, once we figure out for sure what we are bringing, then I’ll figure out what I need to get so it works.

Any advice from anyone who’s recently been to China? I sure would appreciate it. Navigating electronics is so not my thing!

Feel The Love

You guys rock! You’re all so sweet and sympathetic to how crappy and blue I was feeling. I spent most of last night kind of sad and lazy, not wanting to do much or talk to anyone. I read a book, went to bed early and just let myself be sad.  But I woke up this morning and felt better.  I just decided before I got out of bed that “that’s it, I’m done being sad” and it worked. I feel better now.  There are soo many more things that could go wrong in my life. My health is good, I’m engaged to a great guy, my sister is going to produce another nephew for us to love on in just a month, all in all, my life is pretty great right now. Yes. This is disappointing. But it is NOT the end of the world.  (can you hear the “I will survive” song playing in the background?!? Ha ha ha)

SO. 5 to 9 weeks left to wait. Not that long.  This weekend, Jeff & Jill are coming by to help put Emily’s crib together.  YAY!  I have all the fun stuff from my shower to unpack and reposition 818 times if I want, until I get her room the exact way I want it to be.  Friday, we meet with her maybe future pediatrician. I have things to do. It’s all good.

Hugs to all of you. I felt the love when I was reading the comments this morning. :?)

YAY FOR MAY!

Big congrats and much happiness to my friend May who received her referral today!  Go on over, and check out her adorable daughter.

OK…that perked me up a good bit.  I’m totally living vicariously through May right now. She’s soo excited, and has a delightful reason to be!!

New Releases

It seems that referrals are starting to be received today by agencies.  YAY for those folks.  The bad news, and it is supremely bad news for me, is that they only did another stinking 5 days worth of LIDs.  So….they got through Nov 30.  WOO FREAKING HOO.  Seriously, I am very glad they got that far, especially since a friend from my singles mom group is LID 11/30. I’m so excited to see her referral pics!!

But for me, this just SUCKS.  Basically it means I won’t get my referral until Dec. I’m 8 effing LID days away, and it’s still will take them 2 darn months to get to me. Even more upsetting than this (and this is very upsetting) is that I’m no 90% positive that they’ve already matched me with Emily!  She’s just sitting around in an orphanage under who knows what kind of conditions with no one to love her. And here I am, DYING to get over there to her and they won’t let me!!!  It’s horrific to think about.

I have to get back to work. But it’s really hard. I’m just sitting at my desk, dumbfounded once again by what is going on. There isn’t enough chocolate in the world to make this better.

I had a blast at my baby shower. It was such fun, and everyone was so great and happy. I kept doing my "Shannon Happy Dance" all day long!! It was so cool how supportive everyone was!

And special thanks to my sister and my Mom, who put this whole thing together. Every detail was perfect. Perfect!! I think everyone had a wonderful time, and I know that I will always remember it and how special it was. I love you guys!!

A pretty picture frame for Em's room.

Me, behind a mountain of gifts!!

A gorgeous quilt my friend Jody made for Emily. it's soo pretty and fun. And she MADE it. like, by herself. I'm just awestruck!

A cutie dress my sister got for Emily. She's the pregnant lady in all the photos sitting next to me. Yes, it is "Grandbaby Season" in our family!

More Baby Shower Pics

The shower favors. Aren't they cute? My sister even made cookies and wrote "happy" on them in Chinese. She googled it! She rocks!!
